Just a quick post to remind all my Stoneridge peeps that coming up on December 18th at Stoneridge Fellowship Church, is COLLIDE! For those of you who don’t know, Collide is the monthly (well… every-so-often-monthly) youth worship service for grades 7 – 12 students. Pastor James and Pastor Mark, along with an entire team of leaders, put hours and hours of work into this event for you! So bring some friends, bring some energy (Redbull is encouraged, if your parents allow it)  and show up at Stoneridge fellowship at … hmm … not sure of the time. Probably somethign like 7:30 or 8.  I’ll say 7:30 to be safe. There’s  gonna be some awesome music thanks to the Collide band, some pretty sweet drama skits, prizes, food (i think), and a coffee house afterwards, featuring some awesome acts by Stoneridge Youth Band. (lame name i know, maybe we can come up with somethign new).

Yeah, so bring out friends, and get ready to meet with God on December 18th!

I decided to start another series called Character Highlights, where I’ll post an article that analyzes, discusses, and essentially highlights key passages dealing with a certain Biblical character. While I don’t profess to be a theological scholar or even a talented writer, I think it might be interesting to share my take on certain characters from the Bible, as it will perhaps spark up a new perspective within the readers!  I’ll try to lace the articles with as much humor as possible, to lighten up the mood, while ensuring to enforce the biblical backbone of scripture.

I figured I’d begin this series with one of my favorites – Samson. As a kid, I’d always be asked what my favorite part of the Bible was. Well, being like any child who is fascinated with superheroes and comic books, I naturally chose the most hulk-ish, superpowered character I could think of – namely, Samson.

For those of you who may not know there story of Samson, here’s a quick summary. The story is found in the book of Judges, chapters 13 – 16. It’s about this dude, who was born in Israel a LONG time ago. His parents were cool cats, but they couldn’t have kids cause the mom was sterile. But don’t worry, an angel from God came down and was like, “Yo guys, you seem like pretty chill people, so I’ll give you a son. But not just any son, he’s gonna be RIPPED and all the ladies will love him.” So obviously this made the mom and dad super happy. But there was a catch – “Your son is gonna be a superhero, but he’s gotta leave his hair shaggy, and has to stay away from unclean stuff.” The unclean stuff is kinda like telling us to stay away from drinkin and drugs.

So Samson grew up super strong, and had really long hair. When he was, I dunno, a young adult, he met a lady friend. But she was a bad girl – well, bad by Israel’s standards. The way I look at it, is he was just “evangidating” (if you don’t know what this means, then keep it that way). But no, even though she may have been a “bad girl” or a bad influence, God used her as a means for Samson to interact with the Phillistines. The Phillistines are like… hmm let me see. Boston Red Sox = Israelites, New York Yankees = Phillistines. Now I’m gonna skip through a bunch of other stuff, like Samson rippin apart a lion with his bare hands, or him beating up 30 Philli’s and stealing their clothes, or him taking on like 1000 men with a donkey’s jaw bone for a weapon. Yeah, I’ll skip the good stuff, and move on to Samson and Delilah.

So Delilah is his new lady friend. She was a Phillistine too, and all the Philli’s wanted Samson dead. But they had NO chance of killing him, cause he destroyed 1000 of them like nothing. So they decided to bring out the big guns, his kyrptonite, if you want. They forced, or bribed her, to find out Samson’s weakness. (Typical, women are always trouble).

So night after night, when they were sleeping together, she’d ask Samson to tell her his secret (nagg nag nag nag). And Samson, being the cunning, clever dude he is, kept on joking around with her, telling her the wrong things. But eventually, she pulled out the ace of spades, “Samson, if you loved me, you’d tell me.” (Judges 16:15). Well, that did him in. He caved like the Flintstones, and told her everything. She then turns around and cuts his hair off, making him a weakling, and the Phillistines are able to capture him.

Later on, they gouge out his eyes, make him a prisoner, and chain him up to some pillars at some Philli party. Its like, the Yankees won the world series, and they force Manny Ramirez to sit in at the after party. BUT, there’s a happy ending – sort of. Since there are like thousands of Phillistines at this party, Samson prays to God asking for his strength back. God is like, “yeah ok Samson.” and gives him a little bit of strength back. He then busts down the pillars, and kills all the Phillistines. BOO YA. But Samson dies.

Ok. Now Let’s Look a Little Deeper.

So, cool story eh? Too bad the superhero dies, but this isn’t a fairy tale. But let’s take a look at some of the themes here, and maybe twist it around a little to apply to today.

Now none of us are jacked superheroes, that can beat up a thousand men with a bone. But let’s compare Samson to a plain old every-day Christian. This is pretty reasonable, I think, if we look at this through a spiritual lens – Christians are children of God, so they’ve been set apart by God, in a sense. So yeah, Christians are pretty much superheroes! (Ok, now all the non-christians reading this are like… “arrogant pigs”) No no, I’m not saying Christians can beat up or are better than non-Christians. Just making a comparison for the sake of the following allegory.

Now, sometimes young Christian men, or even just guys in general, allow their eyes to fall on, “pretty ladies”. Now, I know myself, I’ve had a few Delilah’s throughout my life, but we’ll leave those specific cases out of this article. Also, if you’re a young lady reading this, I’m not trying to say that women are the ones to blame here – it goes both ways! Guys can also be Delilah’s.

Anyways, what I’m getting at here, is that Samson relationship with his first wife (who was a Philistine) was used by God to carry out his plan. Now, I’m not sure if Samson saw things that way - but it was God’s plan. Now, we can apply that to nowadays: Sometimes guys or girls, date people with the intentions of converting, or changing, the other person. Sometimes, evangidating works – but only if it’s in God’s plan. The bible clearly states do NOT be yolked (or don’t hook up with) chicks who aren’t on an equal level as you. So if you’re a young Christian guy – stay away from the bad girls.

Anyways, moving on – we see that once Samson is with Delilah, there’s a powerful symbolism that surfaces with the image of Samson’s hair. She’s trying to discover his weakness, and go FURTHER with him, and she keeps pressuring him to tell her what his secret is. Now, Samson is a pretty solid dude. And I’m guessing he could have any girl he wanted – now if he’s with Delilah, I’m guessing she’s got all the tools she needs to persuade him – if you know what I mean. Now notice carefully here – after she asks the first few times, Samson doesn’t immediately cave. Rather, he – watch this – COMPROMISES. He begins telling her “Tie me up with these straps”, or “Put my hair in a loom” . See he’s not giving in completely, but he is compromising ever so slightly.

And that’s what I want to illustrate here – when the devil tempts you to sin, he’s not going to say, “You should smoke that entire joint” or “you should get SMASHED” tonight, or even more relevantly, “You should have sex with that girl tonight!” No, you’re going to be tempted with much less serious temptations like, “Oh just have a puff” or “Oh, one drink won’t hurt” or, “Oh, that’s not really sex…”

I entitled this article, “Samson – Hero or Average Joe”. See Samson was a hero – and in the end, killed thousands of Phillistines. Now, it may just be me – but I never got any indication that Samson had much character, or admirable qualities. If you read the story closely, in fact, it seems like Samson is always acting with his own wants and desires in mind. He never resists temptation, and always acts irrationally. Yes, God gave him a gift, and he used that gift – but suffered due to his giving in to temptation. See, Christians are given a gift, and unless we use that gift for God, and clear away all the garbage that gets in the way, we may end up not as heroes, but as tragic heros, where in the end, we don’t live happily ever after like superman would, but rather, we end up dying as a consequence to our sin, like Samson.

In summary, if you don’t get anything from reading this, just keep in mind that its the compromise that the devil hits you with, and don’t allow those women to get in the way. They always trippin.

But there’s HOPE! Your friendly neighbourhood super-blogger has a solution. Well, at least for one meal. I’m going to share a personal secret recipe, that I’ve kept secret for over 2000 years – my recipe for the greatest meal you will ever taste. This meal will have your tastebuds doing the tango for hours and hours. I will warn you – it does not immediately jump out to you as a gourmet dish, that you’d find in a high-class restaurant. But I strongly urge you to give it a chance.

Ok. Let’s start with the INGREDIENTS

First of all you’ll need the following:

1) An appetite for DESTRUCTION … ok not really. A normal appetite will do.

2) A can of tuna – I prefer “Solid White Tuna”, but I’ll let you choose.

3) A can of whole kernel corn, any brand will do

4) A pinch of salt

5) A picture of Seinfeld’s Kramer,  just to look at when you make the meal. A frame/stand is optional, but the actual picture is crucial.

6) Frank’s Red Hot Sauce – cummon,  you know me.

7) 1 Cup of Minute Rice

The Hannah Montana soundtrack, to play for setting the mood

9) Marble Cheese, or Medium Cheddar Cheese

Time for some Preparation.

Alright. So you have your ingredients, and Kramer is smiling down upon you. What now?

1) Well begin by pouring the corn into a small pot, with a can full of water, and bring to a slow boil. Let this cook for the duration of the preparation period

2) Bring 1 cup of water to a boil, then pour the rice in. Cover the pot to keep the steam in, and turn off the burner.

3) Open the can of tuna, spin around 3 times, then dump it onto a frying pan on medium heat (just to warm it up)

4) Now, once the rice is cooked, dump it on the frying pan as well

5) At this point, Miley Cyrus should be screaming out “I can almost see it, that dream I’m dreaming”. Well, you should be dreaming of my amazing meal. Because it will be a mountain, and you’re gonna want to make it move into your stomach.

6) Now that the rice and tuna are on the frying pan, shred some cheese (you decide how much) and dump that in as well… then pour some frank’s red hot sauce in with the rice to give it an orangish-red tint.

7) Now pour the corn on top of it all, mix it together, and serve.

BUT WAIT! It is crucial that when eating this meal, you are either watching an episode of LOST, Seinfeld, or The Office. This is not a meal that can be eaten in silence.

Oh. And a Red Bull would be a good addition.

And there you have it.

The greatest meal you will ever eat that consists of those ingredients. I don’t have a picture of the finished product, yet. So here’s Kramer.

With the recent move to the new church building in Sackville, I thought I’d add a little blurb about the teen ministry that is starting up once again this fall!  It’s a great way for teens to get involved in the church, and also meet and hang out with other teens their age. The program is rapidly growing thanks to the two brains behind it all, Pastor Mark Baker and Pastor James Carr. A super great team, that has “revolutionized” the structure of the youth program at Stoneridge fellowship.

The program breaks down the age groups into Junior and Senior high,  each of which has a completely separate leadership team that consists of volunteers from within the church.

The Fuse group meets every Sunday night at 6:30, and it’s a youth based service, that consists of worship, games, food, small group time, and a message. Each teen is assigned a “small group” that is led by one of the volunteers. This group does activities together – both inside and outside the meeting times.

The Merge Senior High group meets on Monday nights, and follows a similar structure as the Fuse meetings, with a little more mature theme, and a few twists.

Both of these groups, although they have separate service times, participate in the monthly COLLIDE and HYPE events. HYPE is an outreach event where the teens can invite their friends out to an evening of fun activities that is purely entertainment based. Whether it be paintballing, mattress runs, or whatever, it’s a great time for all junior and senior high teens.

COLLIDE is the monthly worship service that aims at developing the teens relationship through God. The material is slightly heavier, and there is an entire team devoted to preparing this night. It’s a great time to love on God and hang out with hundreds of other teens.

I’m super excited for this fall, and if you’re a teen in the HRM area, this program wants you! And yes, as I said before, for all you guys out there… there are cute lady friends to be made.

There are a number of events that Shiloh Youth has hosted over the past few years, a highlight of which, is the Shiloh Youth Conference. Hundreds of teens come from all over the Atlantic Provinces to spend a weekend connecting with God.  Huge names come in to speak – Elijah Waters from Seattle came in this year – and many more, along with talented musicians, and other key youth leaders throughout Canada.  Shiloh has also had in some big Christian band names such as Starfield and Bluetree. Check out the Shiloh Youth Website for more information!

Another amazing element to the Shiloh youth group is the concept of “cadres”. Started by Jeanne Mayo, if I’m correct, the whole idea of cadres is to focus on personal relationships with mature Christian mentors. Each cadre has a leader who pours into the lives of the cadre members, whether it be through direct fellowship, constant communication, or steadfast prayer. If you’re looking for something like this, and live in the near proximity of Sackville, NS, I suggest you come out and give it a try!

So if you have nothing to do on Wednesday night, or if you’re interested in listening to some great local musicians, or putting up with a comedic, Abercrombie-Model-Look-a-like youth pastor, Shiloh is for you!

Oh and for you guys out there, YES, there are pretty girls.

A) Call it a night and go to sleep.
B) Start drafting up plans to steal the exam answers
C) Pay off your family doctor to dress up like you and take the test for you
D) Pop open another Redbull
E) Put on some Kelly Clarkson on your ipod, dance around the library, and start a rave.

If you answered D, you’ve most likely been sucked into the advertising ploys of the soft drink super-corps that force you to depend on the temporary high gained from the highly caffeinated, bovine-mascot sporting, energy drink. Of course, if you’ve ever been spotted walking around with one of these angelic-apendature granting liquids, you’ve undoubtedly been given the judgemental line, “You know, those are bad for you!” I mean, every time I hear that, I’ve most likely already downed a can of liquid fury, so my emotional and mental judgment capability is slightly skewed, causing me to want to pummel their face in. But, regardless of how hyped up on caffeine and taurine I am,  I would never hurt another human being. Unless they insult Miley Cyrus.  But I digress.

Today we’re going to dive into the truth/science behind energy drinks, and hopefully by the end, we’ll come to a conclusion, or something.

Let’s get some background information.

Where do Energy Drinks Come From?

Well, the answer is simple. All energy drinks, whether they be the 5-hour bursts, or the full fledged rock stars, come from the forhead sweat of Samuel L. Jackson.

Actually, if you look at the label, you see Caffeine, Taurine, Chuck Norris’ Urine, Guarana, and Ginseng are some common ones. Caffeine is a stimulate found in coffee, as most of you know, that increases your heart rate and blood pressure, while also dehydrating you. Taurine is an amino acid that your body naturally produces. Unfortunately, the manufacturers can’t syphen out their own taurine from their bodies, so they kill pitbulls and take it from them. Just joking.

Guarana comes from plants, Guarana is also an herb that produces a similar secretion to a conicowhatever hormone. In other words, they’re natural products.

Ok so thats a brief overview of the contents, and there are quite a few more – like B vitamins, creatine, etc. But let’s move on.

Are they bad for me?

Well, before we answer that, lets establish one thing – they DO give you an energy burst, and they enhance mental alertness. Studies have shown that by even rinsing your mouth out with an energy drink can enhance performance. A study that had cylcists wash their mouth out with energy drinks showed that after doing so, their times improved.  And of course, if you need proof that they do work, just go drink 10 redbulls. (Don’t. You’ll see why later.)

So here’s the scoop.  Yes, energy drinks do have adverse affects. Let’s start with caffeine. It dehydrates you if you have too much, and this is never a good thing. So if you’re using energy drinks as thirst quenchers during a sporting event, that’s a bad idea. The taurine and ginseng also contribute to raising blood pressure. That’s not always a bad thing, but moderation is key. Obtaining energy from simple sugars such as the sugars in common energy drinks does give a slight boost, but we’ve all experience the crash that soon follows. Finally, the most negative effect of energy drinks, is being too hyper and obnoxious like this kid on the left, (or one of the Starrett’s. Holla.) which ultimately makes your friends hate you, and you lose any chance of gettin in with the ladies.

What about long term effects? Well, it’s hard to say at this point what kind of damage you’re doing to your system. Energy drinks haven’t been consumed in the amounts that are being seen in today’s culture. It will be difficult to point out any long term affects until they are being tangible proven. However, there are some long term effects of  artificial sweeteners that are present in energy drinks – but those are not unique to this particular beverage. Even Koolaid is guilty of the same crime. Another effect is quite simply addiction. Not in the sense that there are particular additives that make your body crave energy drinks – rather, you simply become dependent on the temporary rush obtained from these drinks.

Ok. Give me some CRAZINESS.

So in France, apparently, RedBull is banned, after an Irish student drank 4 cans and died.

A tenth grade student died in Florida directly due to mixing redbull and alcohol.

A student died in a nightclub a while back after chugging 4 redbulls and going out to dance.

In China, Red Bull (or the equivalent) is not carbonated, and is regularly used as a remedy for the common cold.

So what is the conclusion?

Yeah, energy drinks have side-effects. We knew that. But here’s my take on it. Look at the alternative options to energy drinks:

•  Alcohol
• Lots of Candy
• Continue on with life being eternally sleepy
• Eating healthy foods rich in amino acids and complex & simple sugars
• Become a Power Ranger

My point here, is that although energy drinks do have side effects, at least you’re not pummeling your liver, acting like a complete moron thinking you’re hot stuff, AND you’ll actually remember the next morning. Sure, for you low self-esteem types, who need the added boost from alcohol to man up and talk to the opposite sex, or if you result to drinking to forget about your troublesome life, maybe alcohol helps. I’m just saying as far as getting “buzzed” goes, Redbull doesn’t have any of the above side effects. BUT ANYWAYS. Conclusion:

 Energy Drinks are not as bad as people make them out to be. If you’re drinking one every hour, then you may encounter problems. But energy drinks are more healthy than coffee, less harmful than some of the sugars in soda, and they don’t make you look like a retard. So next time someone says “You know, those are bad for you”… finish your redbull, and kick the snot out of them.

Shoes – what I believe to be one of, if not THE most essential and influential elements of a guy’s wardrobe. Footwear can make or break an outfit, and take my word for it, the ladies notice your shoes. Now, footwear would have to be my strongest forte, and I take pride in my shoe collection. You can define yourself with a certain ride, so put some careful time and planning into selecting your next pair of shoes.

Let’s Break it Down

We have several different uses, categories, purposes, and styles of footwear, each of which cannot be overlooked. I’ll start by outlining the different categories:

• Dress Shoes
• Athletic Sneakers
• Flipflops/Sandals
• Casual Shoes
• Casual Sneakers
• Wildcard

For a man’s wardrobe to be complete, (and I’ll admit, mine has far to go, but I’ll catch up once my budget get’s there) he needs to have at least 5-6 pieces of footwear. Depending on your job, lifestyle, and hobbies, how many of each style of shoe will vary.

However, the goal of this post, is not to explain what you should be wearing and when, I think I’ll just make some suggestions for each category.

Dress Shoes

Well I’ll be honest. My knowledge in this area is quite lacking – to be honest, I’ve never had a real passion for dress shoes, nor have I focused much on them. But for the basics, here are some basic styles:

We’ve got the pointy-toed shoe shown here, which has become popular over the past 2 years. More and more men are resulting to these shoes, as although they may give a bit of a feminine aura, they scream confidence and self-assertiveness. You can pick up a cheap pair of these at Aldo, Spring, and even some basic department stores like the Bay, Sears, and Walmart stock some styles. If you’re looking to drop quite a bit of dough on your dress shoes, check out Town Shoes, Duggers (in Halifax), and other designer outlets.

There are a ton of other styles, but since I’m an amateur at that field, I’ll leave it at that.

Casual Dress Shoes

So sometimes the need for a dress shoe that will be worn in a more casual venue arises. You’re thinking to yourself, “I’ll look a little too dressed up (which is never a bad idea, mind you) with these shoes, but if I wear my sneakers, no one will take me seriously.” Well, thats where your casual dress shoes come in. You have a lot of freedom with this selection, and there are various styles that fit the occasion. You can pull off the loafer look, or perhaps even go with a formal pair of deck shoes by Sperry (see image to the right).  Some great stores for casual-dress are Town Shoes, D2, Aldo, and Biscuit (Halifax).

Casual Sneakers

My favorite category. Now, here’s where a lot of guys fail – at least in the university age category. I mean, how many times have you seen a guy strutting around in some 90’s New Balance running shoes, or some classic “Brooks” runners? Cummon guys, we can do better than that. So here’s a few suggestions:

• Chuck Taylors – every guy needs a good pair of chucks. My personal favorite are the low-cut plain white classics, but right now i’m rockin the hi-top navy’s and the dual-layered plaid and charcoal limitted editions. You can get them virtually anywhere, but I’d suggest Renaissance downtown Halifax, or even Footlocker.
• Pumas – you see them more and more lately, but they do yield a good vibe from the ladies. Watch out though - most girls either hate them or love them, so you’re balancing on a fence there.
• Adidas Superstars – kind of runnin out of style, but they are a viable option!
• Skater Shoes – We have a lot of brands coming out recently, and more and more guys are choosing them. To be honest,  I’m not a huge fan, but certain styles can be pulled off. If you’re a skater by life, throw in a pair of DC’s or Circa’s. Not a big fan of much else, but hey – whatever works. If you’re a skater, then your style is pretty much made up for you. Just pick a manakin and you’re all set.
• Vans/Emerica Slip-ons – although I can’t stand them, they are an increasingly popular trend nowadays. Now if you haven’t seen the slip-ons that have the laces mods on them, I am a huge fan of them. The picture on the right is the new Emerica/Vans line. They are pretty lightweight, and look good with jeans and shorts.
• Lacoste – lacoste has some great styles, although you’ll see the prep/frat-boys wearing them more and more
• Penguin - my personal favorite, the Penguin line-up has some sick threads for the feet. They run pretty pricey, but they’re only starting to get popular. 

Wild Cards

I’m gonna skip over the athletic shoes & sandals, for two reasons. A) There are too many to describe, and B)I’m tired.

So, for the wildcards, I’ve got some great suggestions for you:

Toms

This shoe company is rapidly growing throughout the states, and more and more countries around the world are diving into this organization. Why? Well here’s the scoop: for every pair of Toms you buy, the company donates a pair to a child in Ethiopia. Check out www.tomsshoes.com for more info!

The shoes can be paired with almost anything - as you’re actually part of making the statement. If someone questions your choice, you have a back story behind the shoes. That’s always a good idea when pullin out the wild-cards.

Sanuks – Sidewalk Surfers

These shoes are great for longboarding, hitting up the beach, walking around, and even lounging. They’re lightweight, very durable, and are great for shorts & pants.

The Hipsters

I think everyone needs a good crazy-neon coloured pair of classic kicks. Whether they be from Footlocker or Sole’d Out, or just a random pair from the Salvation Army, it’s always great to whip out a pair of retro high-tops that say you’re out to pary.

Before I start, I’m gonna provide a little “disclaimer” here: If by some manner, I appear arrogant or conceited by posting “style tips” on here, which would subsequently imply that I believe I possess ultimate knowledge of style and “pizazz”, I would like to formally and publicly state that I do believe that. I mean come on! That’s the whole idea behind style – being confident in what you’re trying to say with your personal style choice.

But anyways! On to the good stuff.

Episode 1: The Basics

Before I can get on to the finer details of style, I feel it necessary to provide a little background introduction to what I feel style is. First of all, style is MUCH more than just clothing. Hairstyle, mannerisms, facial hair, jewelry, lifestyle … all of these contribute to one’s cumulative style. Now not only do all of these building blocks compose one’s style, but it is imperative that a constant theme remains throughout each.  For instance, someone who feels the need to plaster themselves with Abercrombie and Fitch (shout out to LG) should most likely be a complete dunse with an IQ of sub-85 and a brain the size of a pea – JOKES. The world needs dumb jocks too!

Anyways, lets begin with lying down a baseline of style, and in this episode, we will focus on the basics of a typical wardrobe. It is imperative that you own the following items, or something similar:

• SEVERAL pairs of jeans – a light sandblasted wash, a dark, straighlegged dress pair, and a wildcard pair, which can be used as a transitional pair during wash cycles
• A variety of t-shirts:  depending on personal choice, it is usually a good idea to have some basic plain coloured t-shirts, multiple white undershirts, and some graphic T’s
• Chords/Khakis/Slacks
• Socks (duh)
• Hoodie
• Dress coat/jacket
• Cardican, V-neck, or basic crew Sweater
• Plaid/Striped Casual Shirt
• Polos
• Cargo Shorts/Pants
• Suits
• Sport Coat
• Dress Pants
• Dress Shirts

And the list could go on. But basically, throughout the next couple episodes, I’ll be touching on each element above, to address how each should be selected and maintained, as well as combined with other wardrobe elements. I should also note that the “STYLE FILES” will mainly be focusing on a man’s wardrobe, as I don’t feel confident enough to dive into the world of women’s clothing.
